Before the Dawn is a melodic death/gothic metal band from Finland, started in 1999 by Tuomas Saukkonen.

History

The band was founded in 1999 by Tuomas Saukkonen, as his solo project. He made the first demo all on his own. Upon releasing the EP "Gehenna", Saukkonen was offered many deals, but none serious enough for him to act upon. The next MCD, "My Darkness", was released to favorable reviews, and it was then that Saukkonen was confronted by Locomotive Music, who offered him a record deal. Joined by Panu Willman, Mike Ojala, and Kimmo Nurmi, the newly formed lineup released their first full length album, "My Darkness", in 2003. It was followed up by a second album in 2004, "4:17 am". The band supported Katatonia on a Scandinavian and European tour in 2003 as well.

In 2005, Saukkonen announced a new lineup for the band, removing all the members currently in, and bringing in Lars Eikind, Juho Räihä, and Dani Miettinen. The reason for this was that Saukkonen felt that the previous members of his band were badly motivated, and not professional enough. The newly reformed band released their next full length album, "The Ghost" in 2006.[3] In 2007, the band released the next full length album, "Deadlight". The single Faithless, featuring Jone Nikula, reached Number Two on the Finland top 20 charts for the week of July 15, 2007.

During the recording sessions for the fifth studio album "Soundscape of Silence", drummer Dani Miettinen dropped out; the band decided to leave the position vacant and work with session drummers for live shows (e.g. Matti Auerkallio). Right after its release end of October 2008, "Soundscape of Silence" went to the top 20 of Finnish album charts (# 14)YLE Pop Top 40. They were joined by Atte Palokangas for drums during the tour.

Dawn of Solace

While in the writing process for their third album, "The Ghost", Saukkonen ended up with over 30 written songs. The first plan was to make a double album for Before the Dawn, but some of the material was slower, more melodic and darker than the songs chosen for "The Ghost" and Saukkonen wanted to take things further without any limitations that Before the Dawn might create. The result was Saukkonen's solo project, Dawn of Solace. The first album, entitled "Darkness" features a melodic sound akin to that of Before the Dawn, albeit with a much stronger gothic metal and doom metal influence.

Στου Ψυρρή υπάρχει ένα μικρό μαγαζάκι που βουτάει στην αμαρτία, με σπιτικά γλυκά. Ροδακινόπιτα, εκμέκ πολίτικο, φωλιές σοκολάτας, σαρίκι πασπαλισμένο με ζάχαρη άχνη, καζάν ντιπί και φυσικά ρακόμελο σε καραφάκι ή μπρίκι. Στις καρέκλες καφενείου, ζητάς θερμίδες με γλύκα, για να ξεχνάς την πίκρα. Με μουσικές ελληνικές. Κάτι Πασχαλίδηδες, κάτι Περίδηδες και έναν αναστεναγμό από το “θα ‘μαι πάντα εδώ να φυλάω αυτά που πέταξες”, από τον Νίκο Πορτοκάλογλου.

Εδώ η αυλή και τα πεζοδρομημένα στενά μυρίζουν κανέλλα, ζάχαρη και το γλυκό της αγάπης είναι η κρυφή συνταγή του μαγαζιού. Από το πρωί για καφέ, ως αργά το βράδυ για γλυκές συζητήσεις και νοσταλγίες.

Τι μου άρεσε:
1) Ένας φίλος μου είπε οτι έχει κρατίσει εδώ και πέντε χρόνια μια χάντρα από το βραχιόλι του ποδιού μου.Τον κοίταξα περίεργα, με απορία και του είπα κάπως απογοητευμένη “Περσινά ξινά σταφύλια”. Ήμουν κάπως άδικη μαζί του. Κάνω ακριβώς το ίδιο πράγμα σε οτι πραγματικά αγαπώ.
2) Μεταξύ εφαρμοσμένων μαθηματικών, πλακέτας και πυκνωτή, έμαθα πώς οι «δάσκαλοι» μας θυμούνται όχι τόσο για τις επιδόσεις μας, αλλά λόγω αμήχανων στιγμών.

Τι δεν μου άρεσε:
1) Δεν έφαγα ούτε ένα γλυκό (όχι δεν γκρεμίστηκε κανένας φούρνος). Μόνο αλκοόλ δέχεται ο οργανισμός μου αυτές τις μέρες.

Giromeri Thesprotia - Epirus Easter

Μοναδικό στο Πανελλήνιο ταφικό έθιμο που λαμβάνει χώρα στο Γηρομέρι Φιλιατών Θεσπρωτίας τη Δευτέρα του Πάσχα στο νεκροταφείο του χωριού. Αμέσως μετά τη λειτουργία οι συγγενείς του νεκρού παραγγέλνουν στους οργανοπαίχτες το αγαπημένο τραγούδι του νεκρού, όσο ήταν στη ζωή, πάνω από τον τάφο του. Η πομπή θα περάσει από όλα σχεδόν τα μνήματα, ακόμη και σε εκείνα που δε βρίσκεται άμεσος συγγενής. Η ατμόσφαιρα είναι ιδιαίτερα συγκινητική και συγκλονιστική συνάμα. Η σιωπή της κατάνυξης στο χώρο του νεκροταφείου ξαφνικά σπάει με τους ήχους του κλαρίνου σε γνήσια ηπειρώτικα τραγούδια. Οι συγγενείς αναπολούν στιγμές του παρελθόντος "γιορτάζοντας" μαζί με τους δικούς τους τη Λαμπρή.

Στο συγκεκριμένο βίντεο βλέπουμε την έναρξη του εθίμου στο κάτω άκρο του νεκροταφείου. Η λήψη έγινε τη Δευτέρα του Πάσχα, 20 Απριλίου 2009 από τον Κώστα Μήτση.

A unique in Greece, tribute to dead, custom that takes place at Giromeri of Filiates in Thesprotia ( Epirus/ Greece) every Easter Monday at the cemetery of the village. Right after the liturgy the relatives of the dead is asking from the present musicians the favorite song that the dead used to dance when he/she was in life. This happens over the tomb of the dead and the atmosphere is very touching and moving. The quietude of the cemetery breaks from the sounds of the clarinet, which plays pure epirotic songs and melodies. The relatives are remembering beautiful moments of the past by celebrating with their people Easter.

Παραδοσιακός ημιορεινός οικισμός που βρίσκεται στο βόρειο τμήμα του νομού, ανήκει στον Δήμο Φιλιατών και απέχει 8 χλμ. από τους Φιλιάτες και 23 χλμ. Βορειοανατολικά της Ηγουμενίτσας . Κοντά του βρίσκετε η Ιερά Μονή της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου.

Η περιοχή Φιλιατών βρίσκεται στο βορειοδυτικό τμήμα του Νομού Θεσπρωτίας, μεταξύ του ποταμού Καλαμά και των Ελληνοαλβανικών συνόρων. Αποτέλεσε διαμετακομιστικό σταθμό στην αρχαιότητα αλλά και κατά την περίοδο της Τουρκοκρατίας καθώς από εκεί διέρχονταν οδική αρτηρία που συνέδεε την Θεσπρωτία με τα Ιωάννινα.

Το Γηρομέρι είναι κτισμένο σε μια καταπράσινη πλάγια. Ένα φιδίσιο πέτρινο καλντερίμι ανηφορίζει στο χωριό με τα παλιά πέτρινα αρχοντικά διώροφα σπίτια, που θυμίζουν πολύ τα σπίτια του Ζαγορίου ως προς την μορφή τους, η μόνη διαφορά, βρίσκεται στις στέγες τους, που είναι με κεραμίδι. Στο Γηρομέρι θα σας εντυπωσιάσει η θεά που διαθέτει και το γαλήνιο τοπίο με την απόλυτη ησυχία.

Εάν επισκεφτείτε το χωριό το Πάσχα θα ζήσετε μια συγκλονιστική εμπειρία το έθιμο της κάθαρσης Ο Κάτω Κόσμος ενώνεται με τον Επάνω, μέσω της μουσικής, έστω και για λίγο. Το παράδοξο έθιμο που τηρείται με θρησκευτική ευλάβεια κάθε χρόνο το πρωί της Δευτέρας του Πάσχα στο κοιμητήριο του Γηρομερίου. ΄΄Με βουρκωμένα μάτια και χείλη που σιγοτρέμουν, οι συγγενείς στέκονται εκστατικοί πάνω από τον τάφο του προσφιλούς προσώπου τους. Η απόλυτη σιγή σπάει από τα μουσικά όργανα που δίνουν το ρυθμό. Οι συγγενείς μουρμουρίζουν το αγαπημένο ηπειρώτικο τραγούδι του οικείου τους και αναπολούν τις στιγμές που έζησαν μαζί του. Έχουν ήδη δώσει μπαξίσι στη ζυγιά (ορχήστρα), που προχωρεί από τάφο σε τάφο ακολουθώντας την ίδια διαδικασία.΄΄. Το τελευταίο μέρος του εθίμου περιλαμβάνει χορό έξω από το νεκροταφείο και έπειτα τραγούδι και χορό στις γειτονιές και τα σπίτια με άφθονο φαγοπότι.
